The Altar Guild is a group of women who set up the church for worship and care for the vestments, "tools" of worship, etc. What does the Altar Guild do? Basically, three things:
  1. Arrange flowers for Sunday services. Every Saturday a rotating team of two women arranges the flowers, which are delivered to the Working Sacristy in the morning. This usually takes an hour to an hour and a half. There are 4 teams, so it's a once a month commitment.

  2. Sacristy Duty. Each Saturday another rotating team of two lays out the vestments, prepares the Communion vessels, marks the lectern Bible, changes the altar frontals (if necessary), and generally makes sure that everything is ready for Sunday worship. This generally takes an hour or less. On Sunday, one person cleans up after the 8 o'clock mass, and another person puts away the vestments, communion vessels, etc after the 10 o'clock mass.

  3. Care of the "tools" of worship. This includes polishing brass and silver, laundering of altar linens, albs, etc., and replacing candles in various locations as needed. Laundry, of course, is done at home; the other things must be done at the church. Brass is usually polished on Thursdays, but other tasks can be accomplished according to the person's own schedule.

The celebrations of Christmas, Holy Week, and Easter require more personnel for Sacristy Duty, and usually involve additional volunteers from the parish to help arrange flowers.

And, or course, there are always those miscellaneous things that fit in no category at all, except that of "Do you mind helping with this?"
